Mike Gegen
Senior Vice President/Financial Advisor, Private Wealth Management
A Wealth of Experience
Mike earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Finance from Colorado State University, in 1982. After graduation, at Empire Savings & Loan, he continued to learn the value of financial analysis, objectivity, and a conservative approach to financial management. In 1985 Mike joined Dain Bosworth, now known as RBC Wealth Management, where he began his career as a Financial Advisor. Mike is Series 7 and 65 licensed and has credentials to assist clients with life and disability insurance.
Mike has been quoted in various local publications including the Rocky Mountain News, the Denver Business Journal and most recently (February 1, 2014) The Denver Post. After the stock market crash of 1987, he was profiled in an article titled “Broker an Island of Calm in Market Storm.” He has been a previous contributor, as a financial commentator, to Denver’s 850 KOA radio as well as Denver affiliates of NBC and CBS television stations.
Today, as Senior Vice President, Private Wealth Management, at Baird, Mike has 30 years of financial services experience. He feels fortunate that his job and his passion are one. Mike gets to use his expertise, to match your assets and risk preference, helping you meet your unique financial goals.
Personal
Mike lives in Denver, with his wife of 33 years, Nancy. They are blessed with four children; Michael, Nick, Kate and Meg. He enjoys reading, hiking, golf and pretty much anything that allows connection with his children.
Committed to the Community
Mike’s community involvement has ranged, over the years, from Kiwanis Club, serving on a school board and coaching a variety of teams. He is also involved with Mile High United Way, Outreach International, Providence Network, Metro Caring as well as Denver Hospice.
Michael Gegen

Michael joined Baird in 2016 and has partnered with The Gegen Group to bring over 50 years of experience and financial expertise to clients. Michael and The Gegen Group’s mission is to help their clients work towards and maintain financial prosperity by implementing strategies that seek growth and income as well as the preservation of principal. Starting with what you value most, the team strives to understand your goals and objectives. Their mission is to make your financial journey a successful one. This is accomplished by providing a comprehensive view of your entire financial situation.
Prior to joining Baird, Michael was a banker at JP Morgan’s main office in Denver. There, he created strategic investment plans for affluent individuals and families to help them meet their financial goals. He also worked in the mortgage industry, gaining experience providing client-based solutions to mortgage underwriters and at the Monfort Companies where he managed a diverse portfolio of private investments and real estate holdings. His areas of expertise include financial planning, investments, estate planning, wealth management, trust services, employee and executive benefits planning, education funding, legacy planning, insurance review and charitable gifting.
Michael attended the University of Denver where he studied Finance. He has received the JP Morgan Chase ‘National Achiever’ Award in both 2014 and 2015 and is a member of the National Honor Society. At Baird, he leads his training class in assets and client development.
Personal
Michael is a Colorado native. In his free time, he enjoys spending time outdoors fly fishing, hiking, camping and skiing.

Michael serves his community by dedicating his time to the Denver Leadership Foundation, Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, Project PAVE and the Boys and Girls Club of America.
Ian Smith
Client Assistant
Ian joined The Gegen Group at Baird after graduating from the University of Colorado Boulder, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance with an option in Personal Financial Planning. In his role, Ian is committed to delivering exceptional service and support to our valued clients while helping foster strong relationships and assisting with their financial needs. He works closely with the team to help ensure a seamless client experience and support the financial strategies developed for our clients.
Prior to joining Baird full-time, Ian interned in Baird's Denver office during the summer of 2025. Throughout his internship, he gained firsthand experience supporting client service initiatives, learning the intricacies of wealth management, and collaborating with team members to help meet client objectives. Following the successful completion of his internship, Ian returned to Baird to continue building his career in the financial services industry.
Ian recently passed the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) examination, demonstrating his dedication to advanced financial planning knowledge and professional development. He is currently working toward obtaining his securities licenses and expanding his expertise to better serve clients and support their long-term financial goals.

Ian was born and raised in Minnesota. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, skiing, hiking, and playing golf.
